Life’s Interruptions
I propose the question, “How should we respond to life’s many daily interruptions?” We experience endless intrusions into our daily life. Some examples are the ringing of the phone, the door bell rings, someone asks a question, the light turns red, we are asked for help or even the TV commercials. All of life’s interruptions create for us the need for our response. Our response may vary for one of delight to one of anger. Our reaction to these interruptions will usually have an impact on our life and frequently the life of another person or persons. Do we consciously deal with these interruptions or do we impulsively respond based upon our mood, attitudes or dispositions that we have toward the event. Whether our reaction is a conscious or unconscious one, our response may not be in concert with the will of the Lord. I offer the following advice from the “Imitation of Christ” by Thomas A. Kempis. I quote: “The first of four things which will bring great peace into our life is ‘Try, my son, to do the will of another rather than your own.’” We can deal with life’s interruptions as a curse or we can recognize these events as a blessing. The decision is ours.
